Then import the image from the saved file back to the document and save. The only fix appears to be to open the document in the MS Office app and find the offending images, then do 'save as.' on the image to save a picture (jpg) of the image.

Least affected in our experience is iWork. the 'new' version of MS Office has it in spades. The same problem appears in other apps - e.g. The problem is caused by the way in which these types of images get embedded in the file - for unclear reasons they are hard to read. The dodgy images will have been created either by cut / paste from another (or same) application in OS X, or have been created by dragging the image from desktop to a page in document.
